A few tips for the NRAA good starting point for getting your first gun is to start at the beginning, says Gottliebs partner and attorney in Washington, D.C., Joe Sacco.

It’s cheaper than buying a used gun and is more likely to survive a burglary.
“A low-price gun will last longer and cost less than a new gun, which is a big benefit if you’re in a tight financial situation,” he says.
“You’re more likely than not going to get it.”
In addition, you should have a high-quality gun that can be used for hunting, says Sacco, and “I can’t stress enough how important it is to have a firearm that will be useful in any situation.”
He also recommends getting a hunting knife.
“It’s important that you don’t buy a knife if you don, in fact, want to hunt,” he cautions.
